November 18, 2017: A Double Wedding Ring Workshop
Held at the Milford Townhall
Guild member Janet Reader Day has made 6 Double Wedding Ring Quilts using the Creative Grid Templates. She will spend the day showing you all the tips and tricks she has learned. You will create a section of the DWR pattern that contains all of the seams you will encounter when making a wall quilt, bed quilt, or bed runner.
All sample material is provided from the Fairbairn Donation and two sets of Creative Gride Templates are available for the day.
This course will help you decide if you really want to tackle a DWR project and purchase a set of your own templates!

What happened at the workshop:
The Workshop started with a PowerPoint presentation of all the steps needed to sew the key seams of the double wedding ring pattern. Everyone dove into the sewing and by lunch most of the paper piecing sewing was done. Five of the twelve attendees asked for more fabric and patterns inorder to complete their ring at home! Everyone left with a sample "block" to have as a future reference, a sheet full of tips, and the fabric requirements to make a full sized quilt.
Sat. March 17, 2018 Marnie Hicks

Marnie Hicks taught her "All Boxed Up" workshop at the Milford Town Hall.
A little bit about me (Marnie):
First of all, my husband is from the County - Gilead Rd., so we visit the County often.
We live just east of Napanee.
I started quilting in 2000, retired from nursing in 2005 and started working part time at The Perfect Stitch in Kingston, now Stitch by Stitch
where I also teach some classes. I have conducted workshops for the Rouge Valley Guild, the Durham Guild and the Belleville Guild and am looking forward to our time together .
"All boxed up" is a courthouse steps log cabin. The pattern shows the traditional way to piece it, but I will show you how to paper piece it without going through the paper. The benefit is that all the blocks are exactly the same size which makes putting the quilt together a breeze. There is no picking out of paper as with other paper piecing techniques.
The blocks are all the same size but the fabric placement make them look like they are floating. I hope you like it. The men coming into the store are drawn to it.

Marnie
Eight people were able to attend Marnie's workshop. The day started out with a 35 minute trunkshow of Marnie's sewn together treasures. Some were quilted, most were just the tops so we could peer at the back of her work and inspect the seams. It was proven to us that paper piecing, no matter the method, results in very accurate seams and the block is the perfect size each time.
Altogether, the day was very relaxing, informal and informative!

May 10, 2018 Workshop by Sue Patton

Sue is an internationally known quilter. She taught us her class:
Start With A Stencil, Stitch It With Confidence, Finish It Fast &Fabulously
....This class is sure to have you looking at all those stencils you've collected over the years in a whole new way. Sue will show you how to take one simple stencil and create dozens of designs with it. The designs will be created to fill every area of the quilt, blocks, borders,
sashings and background fillers. This class will also use simple drawing tools in a variety of shapes and sizes and show you how to create your own reusable stencils using a wide range of ideas and inspirations found all around you every day. If you have ever been stuck on what to quilt on those finished tops, quickly and easily, then this is the class for you.....

Well, Sue explored and she answered the age old question... How should I quilt this quilt? (with her quick and easy stencil solutions)
She brought the quilt sandwiches, the stencils and the "pounce pads" so we could play all day! Sue talked non-stop in between free motion quilting demonstrations and drawing on a design board. We heard all of her tips and tricks for creating square, flat, prize winning quilts. From machine settings, batting choices and thread types and uses, we learned it all!

August 9, 2018 Libs Elliott Workshop

Libs will be teaching us her technique for making our own "Embrace the Chaos" quilt, pictured here.
Using only paper, pencils, bingo chips and dice – no computers required! - Libs will walk you through a series of worksheet exercises that mimic her code. By using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will follow Libs’ steps and end up with – surprise! – a random quilt pattern layout.
Once the layouts are complete, we’ll start cutting up our fabrics, work on block piecing and top construction. At the end of the class, each participant will leave with her/his very own quilt plan and all the knowledge required for finishing the project at home.
("Embrace the Chaos" replaces the "Rebel Quilt" workshop, providing participants with a richer learning experince!)

We had an amazing “Embrace the Chaos” workshop with Libs Elliott yesterday! 14 members and 2 guests experienced a demo of her computer code which creates her randomized quilt patterns and then we got to create our own quilt pattern (without the computer!). Using bingo chips, a dice and our own fabric choices, we each ended up with an original layout. Several of us were challenged to really ‘think outside the box’. Libs gave us many additional tips and tricks, and additional sources of information on the internet. It will be wonderful to see all our finished quilts!
