Program for September 13, 2017: Kathy Wylie Lecture

Appliqué quilts are among the most beautiful, jaw-dropping, crowd-pleasing and award-winning of all quilts. This lecture is all about appliqué.
Do you marvel over beautiful appliquéd quilts and wonder how they were accomplished? You might be surprised at the number of techniques and methods that can be used to create these masterpieces. This lecture will give you some insight into the various types of appliqué along with stunning photographs and real-life examples.
It's true, there are many ways to appliqué and Kathy had examp;es of nearly all of them!  As well as two large, award winning, phenomenally appliquéed quilts, Kathy had lots of actual samples from her Powerpoint presentation.  We were allowed to examine everything upclose at our Break Time!
We learned a great deal in a very short time, thank you very much Kathy!

Program for Wednesday October 11, 2017

Participating Eastern Ontario Guilds have entered a quilt(s) in a travelling 'Canada 150' Quilt Show.  This exhibition has been touring around the province of Ontario, since early spring 2017, hanging at various quilt shows.  The Prince Edward County Quilters' Guild had these quilts displayed as our October 2017 Program.

Pat Lemaire gave the trunkshow, telling us the background and the story behind these quilts.  We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the quilts and were amazed at the detail and workmanship involved.
Our guild entered the quilt you see here.  It is a compilation from 22 PECQG members (two of whom made 2 blocks each). The individual blocks highlight an aspect of Prince Edward County.  The quilt was assembled by Margot Young and Gisele Feuiltault, organizers of the 'Window on Prince Eward County' Challenge.

The Crazy Eights Came!
Our group started ten years ago. We were Quilters who wanted to try something different, so, we embarked on a journey to step out of our comfort zone and try fibre art.

We have experimented with various crafts, dyeing, painting on fabric etc.

Every year we give ourselves a new challenge to create something artistic and different.

One year we gave everyone a piece of wire meshing and told them to create something. It was amazing the creativity that that challenge produced.

We have shown our work in the Colborne art gallery and are frequently asked to give trunk shows at various Quilt Guilds.

We look forward to meeting you. Below is a small sample of our work.
Four of the Crazy Eights entertained us with their show, stories and many techniques.  They  feed off of each other's energy and creativity,  pushing themselves to develop more of their "inner artist" and how to problem solve as a bonus!  There were many inspired PECQG members in the audience!

Program for December 13, 2017

Before the meeting there was a potluck dinner.  Just as the meal was finishing we presented armfuls of placemats to a Community Care for Seniors representative.  They will be distributed/gifted out to Prince Edward County Meals-on-Wheels recipients before Christmas.  Read the article by clicking here.
Following the dinner, we were treated to a "Studio Tour" PowerPoint presentation.  Ten  members had their home invaded by a PECQG  Program Committee Member and her camera....it was requested that nobody tidy up before she arrived!  Each guild member, quilt studio owner, explained just what we were seeing in the presentation and how their setup works for them.
We saw fabric, thread and ruler storage ideas, design walls, future inspiration walls, an after market sewing machine light, sewing tables big and small, lots of Ikea furniture, a long arm studio, sewing spaces big and small, and a pre-cut strip inventory.  There were so many ideas presented that only a few are shown in the images below.
We enjoyed a very relaxed style of meeting this month. Everyone was so full and content after that amazing potluck meal, and the Studio Tour slide show was so captivating, that we all agreed to continue to it's completion, long after the usual allotted program time span had passed.  Even though we had a late night, it was a good one!

January 10, 2018 cancelled due to lack of venue!

Program for February 14, 2018: Kallisti Quilts Trunkshow

Picture

Established in November 2000, Kallisti Quilts is passionate about providing a diverse collection of imported fabrics for the discerning and innovative quiltmakers of Ontario and beyond. I specialize in Japanese and African cotton fabrics, including fairly traded handmade batiks, but I continually endeavour to find new suppliers and refresh your quilting vision. For a tactile experience, you may visit Kallisti Quilts at the shows listed on the Events page. I attend over a dozen shows each year, host two Open Houses in Waterloo and squeeze in as many trunk shows as my schedule allows.

Michelle Dunn, owner of Kallisti Quilts, spoke for almost 1.5 hours! No one was yawning so she kept telling her story.  She is a very energetic speaker who has a wonderful knowledge of fabrics and how they are made.  It was very interesting to learn how she acquires her fabric through her contacts.  She never knows when or even if  her order will arrive!  Several countries were represented by her fabric choices in her quilts.  Some samples from her trunk show are shown below.

March 14, 2018 Program:

As we entered the meeting, the President's Challenge submissions for the Under the Sea Challenge were pinned up for all to see!
We visited three demonstration stations manned by our own members.

Patricia showed us how to encase a 5 inch square of fabric within a 10 inch square without any cutting, and she showed us how to make bias binding by folding a large rectangle of fabric.

Geraldine taught us how to make perfect circles using light-weight interfacing, and she showed us how to make several straight of grain half-square triangle blocks from two squares of fabric.

Anne showed us her world of "hexies"!  We were entranced by her various methods of piecing them together, either by machine or hand sewing.

Voting occurred during the Break.......

The winners!
Patricia Fullerton won 1st place for her "Fiorella" entry (top left), and 2nd place for her "Curiosity" wall quilt (top right).
Penny Hopkins' entry won third place (pictured bottom left).  Penny has yet to name her piece.

April 11, 2018 Program: Helen Garland

Helen creates pieced quilts using the technique developed and promoted by Ruth B. Macdowell.  She gave an informational talk about the construction of a representational art quilt from inspiration to finished quilt.  She brought several quilts to show various considerations that impact the design and the finished piece.  An accompanying power point will illustrated the steps in making such a quilt.
Helen pretty well gave us a workshop amount of information during her trunk show!  She fascinated us with the detail, precision, and beauty of her pictoral quilts.  Because Helen is an entertaining speaker, she kept our attention riveted to her as she taught us every step of her quilt making process.  Oh boy, the creative ideas are flowing now, thanks Helen!

Sue is always filled with high energy, humour, stories and tips, ensuring her classes are non-stop education and fun. Sue is the author of Quilting Possibilities and Adaptable Quilting Designs published by AQS. She willingly shares her talents and has designed fabric, thread and stencils; machine, hand and redwork embroidery patterns; machine, hand and computerized quilting designs; innovative whole cloth designs; and a full range of training videos.
Over the last decade, Sue's work has been featured in dozens of magazines. She has appeared on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims; America Sews with Sue Hausmann; Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show by QNNtv; and Linda Taylor's Longarm Quilting Show.
A mother of three, Sue resides in Canada when she is not teaching at shows, guilds and retailers.

Well, Sue came and she didn't disappoint!  She is a very warm, energetic speaker who, from her stories, lets you know just how "down to earth" she really is.  Her talk was entertaining and her quilts were not only plentiful but magnificent too.

August 8, 2018 Program: Libs Elliot

Picture
Libs Elliott will tell us all about how she makes handmade geometric quilts using a generative design and processing code.

Libs will teach her workshop "Embrace the Chaos" on the following day.

Libs Elliott is a textile designer who explores the intersection of technology and traditional craft by using generative design in her work. A deep appreciation for craftsmanship, design history and future-focused applications are all reflected in her work. She studied Material Art & Design at OCAD University and lives and works in Toronto, Canada. As a quilter, Libs' ongoing project is an exploration in how modern technology can transform a traditional and tactile craft into modern functional art without abandoning the inherent pleasures of handcrafted products.

On Wednesday August 8, 2018  Libs entertained us with her journey into the world of quilting.  Interestingly she entered it without realizing what an expansive and varied world it was.  She definitely has a recognizable style and is fast becoming a sought after teacher and lecturer.
