2023 Best Of Show Winner - Tamiko's Quilt by Janet Reader Day

91 x 111 inches
Techniques: paper piecing and Y seams
Quilted on a Domestic Machine, Free Motion with Stitch Regulation
Pattern Information: based on a quilt made by Tamiko Mawatari.
Every niece and nephew had the choice of receiving cash as my wedding gift, or a quilt. So far, they have all chosen a quilt.
Until now, they all chose the double wedding ring pattern. This time, my niece chose Tamiko Mawatari's Diamond Dust quilt, which won a prize at the 2018 Tokyo International Quilt Festival.
I drafted 10 different paper pieced stars, and their in-between joining sections from scratch, then printed the sections out as needed onto "white" newsprint, purchased from Staples. All I had to go by were some very small, blurry photos taken by attendees at the Festival, with only one clear close up image available.
I incorporated one fat quarter bundle of Japanese fabrics into the mix of many different fabric brands. Joining all the paper pieced sections together was a challenge because I kept interrupting this quilt for other more time sensitive projects allowing me to forget the best method I had previously discovered. Sigh.....
After a year and a half, I finally finished this very challenging quilt. I then immediately informed my niece that she still had to wait until after this quilt show to receive it!

Best Use of Colour - Hexy Memories by Deanna Gaudaur

102 x 96 inches
Twenty years ago, I got bitten by the English Paper Piecing bug. I kept making more hexies out of scraps of fabric and joining them together with no plan in mind. Finally I decided to add some applique borders, using scraps of green fabrics from many quilting friends.
2023 Viewers' Choice Bed Quilt

Dream Big Opal Panel by Janet Reader Day
99.25 x 101 inches
This is a whole cloth quilt.
Quilted on a Domestic Machine, Free Motion with Stitch Regulation
Pattern Information: Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero designed this digital print for Hoffman Fabrics
Boy did I have fun deciding what stitch patterns to put in each petal! I collected and sketched out designs for weeks before I started quilting this panel.
I first saw this panel on Pinterest. To my knowledge, the Dream Big Opal colour way is the only one that comes this big. I found this fabulous backing fabric on a road trip to Berlin, Ohio a few years ago. The perfect binding fabric came from Picton Fabric World.
I love Glide thread, so does my machine, but some rayon and cotton threads had to be used to fill in all the different petal colours. Because of this quilt, I now have many more large cones of thread than I used to!
I like using 2.5 inch wide double fold binding strips. The extra width gives me sharper corners and makes the hand sewing easier.

2023 Viewers' Choice Wall Quilt
Tenacious by Janet Reader Day
40 x 33.25 inches Techniques: raw edge applique covered by a layer of tulle and a variety of thread colours Quilted on a Domestic Machine, Free Motion with Stitch Regulation This quilt is based on my own original pattern. Nature is the source of my inspiration. The ancient white cedars that find purchase in a tiny crack of rock, who are able to flourish as they withstand the ravages of the seasons and time, have always fascinated me. I wonder how old these trees are, how deep their roots are....I wonder how many people have stopped to appreciate their "grip on life"! I took this photo in 2018 from the seat of a canoe, looking upward at the steep rock cliffs of Bon Echo park. |
